I wanted to buy this book (Compendium of Clinical Pathology )and searched on amazon. It shows the following:
Paperback edition ISBN: 0-89189-366-0 2nd edition 1993

Hardcover 1st edition March 2005 (unavailable presently)

I am confused which is the latest edition (1st edition 2005 vs 2nd edition 1993?). Is there a lot of diff bet the two or else I can go ahead and buy the paperback edition? Can somebody solve the confusion?

Also I am having a hard time reading Henry's, is it absolutely required for the boards? I did see the list of books in the FAQ section but can somebody guide as to where to and which book to start with.

Thanks.

Don't buy this book unless you want to make corrections to it as you read it... It is loaded with errors...

Can u suggest some book for CP?

I disagree with the previous posters. I loved the compendium. I heartily recommend it without reservation. You can order it directly from the ASCP here:

http://www.ascp.org/511live/timssnet/products/showlong.cfm?action=long&Primary_id=3660

I have heard a rumor that a new edition is coming soon, so you may want to wait.

Does it have mistakes: Yes. Should they have been picked up in editing: Yes. Should that deter you from buying the book: Absolutely not. I can tell you from my experience and from those of every other person I know who used this book (and there are many) for their board study that this book is the BEST CP board review book out there.

If you know this book 100%, EVEN with the mistakes, you will pass. So many questions on the boards, ones I didnt know, I knew it was in the book. I would think "Darn, the answer to this question is in the compendium, I even know where it is in the book, but I can't remember anymore." It even helped for AP too 🙂

Of course, you ought to supplement this with questions and images (Back of Koneman, Heme atlas, Henry question book is overly tough but the quizzes in the end are good). And other sources dont hurt as a second source (Osler notes, Jones Clinical Laboratory Pearls, CAP website inspection checklists, etc.)

As for reading Henry, well, if you want to read a dense 1472 page book and think you can absorb all of the relevant parts, be my guest, but I would not recommend it. I think it is a terribly inefficient use of your study time.

If you are dead set against the Compendium, then I would go with Clinical Laboratory Pearls by Jones.

But all of this is just my opinion

great post, thanks. ? for you/others that have taken boards recently related to the Mais book.
In going through my 2nd month of CP (yay, chemistry...witha hint o'sarcasm....), i'm beginning to wonder how much methodologies etc on the boards. Mais seems pretty clinical and practical, and I mean i know that just knowing it inside and out probably isn't enough to pass the CP boards, i'm know you need to go through rotations and learn a lot that way (signing out PBs/marrows...which can't always been learned from a book), but seriously, can you treat it similar to the good ol' days of step 1 studying..and equate the Mais book to FIRST AID, where if you knew it inside and out, you literally would pass the exam.

Yeah well there were also questions they asked on board that the book as incorrect or hard to understand information, 😡 so knowing the Book (unless you know it and correct it) is not going to help on that question.

If you could study it and correct it, then you will definitely pass CP boards (well you need an atlas for pictures too), but as review book, I find it hard to use when I feel I am use check it against other sources every time I am not sure if it is right...

As a first year on chemistry I'd like clarification on this too. I recently bought the Mais and am wondering what I should supplement it with. I decided to buy the McClatchey (seems more readable than Henry). Would it be worthwhile to buy a practice question book at this stage? Do you really need the Henry in order for the questions to make any sense? As a side note, do you think its worthwhile to buy an AP question book also?

I think that is you know the book 100%, even if you get questions wrong because of wrong info in the book (I dont remember anything on my boards that was asked that the compendium would have steered me wrong on), you will pass.

In any case, I think it is definitely better to read this book and do questions (where you will pick up the mistakes) then to try to read Henry and absorb that. I share your frustration with the books mistakes, but IMHO its the best one out there.

Thx. for ur input guys.
I have ordered for the book.

that's why i asked in another post if we altogether make little posts on whatever errors we've come across. God knows when the new book willl be out. I'll start. (see other thread)
