It seems to me that there is no end to the possible interpretations of an arterial blood gas sample. I mean even a completely normal sample could have two compensatory derangements in it. I'm gonna give up the whole shaddang and just use automated interpreters when I am a resident.
Does anyone have any favorite interpreters? i have been using this one: http://www.altitude.org/calculators/ABGcalculator.htm but it doesn't actually tell you the diagnosis.

Look for The ICU Book. It has a great chapter that's only about 15 or so pages long that made it all clear for me, even the basic science behind it (which is a miracle, because I tend to avoid the basic sciences).
