Anybody know about competitive MCAT scores for applying to MPH programs? Just about all schools allow an MCAT score to be substituted for the GRE, which is what I plan to do. Therefore, I have never taken the GRE and am having a tough time gauging my candidacy. Is there anyone who applied with an MCAT score and was accepted? Or hear about others? Thanks a bunch! 🙂

and Happy early Thanksgiving!!

Unlike med school admissions, I think experience far outweighs test scores. Since some people do the MPH to beef up med school chances in the future, I would think that the average is likely lower than the average for med school. However, the top MPH schools probably need competitive scores, and in a combined MD/MPH program, you need to be admitted into both programs separately.

as a current mph student, i want to stress: don't underestimate the importance of the gre. especially if you're looking to go to a top school. if you're interested in epidemiology or biostatistics, you really have to do extremely well on the quantitative portion of the exam.

unlike the mcat (i've written both exams and done very well), the gre is much easier and less expensive to prep for. buy a content review book, i prefer kaplan, and thoroughly review concepts. after that, practice, practice, practice! the gre is adaptive, and as you get more questions right, the difficulty of the questions increases. make sure you practice with real adaptive tests. my favorite practice exams were at http://graduatetestprep.com.

good luck! pm me if you have any questions about public health or the gre!
