This is purely for interest sake. I am a Canadian undergrad and was just wondering what the competitive residency programs/hospitals are in the US. I don't really have any intention of going (maybe a fellowship one day) but for now, just curious. Thanks.

Derm, Plastics, Urology, Ortho, Rads, Neurosugery, optho, anesth(?) are all pretty competitive....basically look at what makes the most money per hour of work, and doesn't necessarily have serious call if any.

There are some other that could be added to that list of competitive specialties. As far as competitive residency programs, that all depends on a variety of factors. Remember, not just the big name university programs are the best, and different programs may be strong for one specialty but average or weak for another.

I have found this site helpful. It includes a percentage matched for each of the past several years, and it seems to be somewhat close to reality as far as the numbers go.

Maybe I should be a bit more clear, which hospitals are best to go for residency that everyone dreams of getting into?

Although some hospitals are considered to be prestigious, all the departments within them vary greatly. To get better answers, you need to pick a specialty and examine it individually for top residencies in that specialty.

It is true that the programs within each hospital greatly. As a gross generalization though, programs directly affiliated with the top research medical schools are considered prestigious so: Harvard, Hopkins, Stanford, Yale, Columbia affiliated programs would be considered quite prestigious.

Well even though neurosurgery has long hours it is one of the highest paid specialties, therefore it remains competitive.

To the OP - check the US News hospital rankings - they separate the best programs out by specialty.

that and the fact that its a very small field. Still its much less competative than derm, not a ton of people try to go into neurosurgery.

anyway, i was just giving him some friendly crap
