Hey all, so my laptop just crapped out about 2 weeks ago. I am in the process of looking for a new computer and just wanted to get any feedback from current/potential medical students before I dropped another grand.

I have a dell tower w/ monitor for my apartment, but really feel I will need a laptop for labs and lectures. Would you all recommend getting a Mac or a pc? I have heard that the macs have a lot of really pertinent apps for gross anatomy and chemistry, but am not sure to the truth of that. Let me know what you all think- because honestly I really know very little about computers and would really appreciate some help.

If it makes any difference I will most likely be attending Boston University.

Thanks!

Just make sure BU doesn't have some mandatory school-sold laptop (choose from Dell or Mac) like UMass does. Otherwise even if you have the exact same computer, you'll have to buy one of theirs.

I've got a 15" Macbook Pro which I really like. I combine that with a piece of software called Bento (Mac only) to take all my notes. Basically I'm building a huge database of the lectures etc. I also use it to keep my power points, and lecture recordings organized and together. Pretty slick piece of software, only $30 from the Mac App Store.

That being said, at least at my school. The quad core processor, high end graphics, and extra RAM are definitely overkill. I could get by just fine with a nice little macbook air as well.

Best of luck.

Instead of Bento you should be using Evernote.

Interesting, can you access your notes from any internet connected device? That's the major draw to Evernote for me.

Not exactly. But I can access them from my iPhone with the Bento app. That's all I really need.

I don't spend too much time away from my laptop anyway, and when I do it's times when I want absolutely nothing to do with studies. I always have my phone.

I like it, a lot. Bento should prove it's worth when it comes time to get ready for boards next summer. A whole 2 years worth of instruction typed into my own words will really help studying I think.

Ahhh. When you're a resident on the wards you may feel different. I also like that I can create notebooks of info to share with my juniors with Evernote.
