My GPA went down my sophomore year because a family member was diagnosed with cancer. My GPA mainly went down because of second second semester of sophomore year, I maintained an A- average throughout the semester. However, in the last 3 weeks of semester I screwed up and ended up with 2 B's and 2 B+'s. This was a huge blow and it's the worst feeling to have when all you worked for all semester is ruined in only a 3 week time span.

In my required pre-med courses I have only received two A's in calc and stats. I have made B/B- in biology and general chemistry. I made B's both semesters in organic chemistry. My main problems in college was the final. I do well throughout the semester, maintaining a B/B+/A- and those grades get knockdown at the end. I hope to fix this junior year.

After my junior year, I expect to bring my overall GPA back above a 3.5 (very likely) and bring up my science GPA to around a 3.3-3.4. Science courses I will be taking junior year are biochemistry, physics, and second semester of calculus.

Extracurricular Activities

1.5 years of analytical chemistry research (started summer after freshman year)

1 year of general chemistry tutoring

1 year of shadowing a family doctor

1 year of community service ( working at soup kitchen and tutoring at a high school)

hobbies- member of art club, pottery club, and spanish club. intramural basketball

Junior year extracurriculars- President of Spanish Club, Analytical chemistry research, shadowing/volunteering at hospital, tutoring organic chemistry, lab assistant, and community service.

Freshman summer- Chemistry Research/ Poster Presentation

Sophomore summer- Currently I am studying for the MCAT, volunteering at the medical surgical unit, and shadowing doctors. I am dedicating this summer for clinical experience. I am also doing some community service work.

1. How does my application look so far and do I have any chance of getting into at least one medical school in Texas?

2. What advice do you have for me heading into Junior year?

3. What do you guys recommend I do this summer besides studying for MCAT, volunteering, and shadowing doctors?

1) Pretty good ECs for a rising junior.

2) Most important: Rock all of your science classes during your junior year. Your science GPA is considerably lower than the average MD accepted sGPA of 3.61. You have a downward trend at this point, so make it into U shape by doing very well next year.

Do clinical volunteering for the next year, pick up a few different specialties besides just the family doc, add a DO if you want to apply to TCOM, and keep the rest of the stuff going if you can.

Don't give up hope because of what happened during your sophomore year, but your freshman science GPA wasn't the best either.

3) Those things will probably keep you busy, don't you think? Maybe get a part time job if you can. You'll want to do really well on the MCAT.

Texas is one of the best states to be a resident, but you'll still need to bring your GPA up and do well on the MCAT. I'm assuming you know Spanish based on being president of the Spanish club, so that should help you at TX schools too
