Hello future docs and colleagues,

I apologize if my question has been repeated multiple times, I've searched around and haven't found the answers I'm quite looking for.

I am currently a senior in college and majoring in healths science. My major isnt considered "pre-med," as it doesnt go through the physics, chem, and bio.
The only thing i have complete was the math (1 year of calculus), one year of english, and one year of social sciences.

So what I wanted to know was if there was anyway I can apply to a MD or DO school and go under a provision/conditional acceptance.

My GPA right now is a 3.39...
Although my GPA isn't a 3.9 or 4.0, I have worked in multiple research labs, shadowed, and worked side by side with other doctors. My extra curricular activities is strong.

Any help is GREATLY appreciated.

Thank you

You can APPLY without all the prerequisites, but you absolutely have to take them before you matriculate. Because your prereq grades are important, it's probably inadvisable to apply without having taken any of the physics/chem/bio courses. Adcoms will definitely want to see your grades in those classes. Plus, if you applied now for admission next fall, there's no way you could fit in the 4 semesters of chem by matriculation..

The best thing for you to do would be to take these classes, ace them, raise your GPA, and apply when you have most of them under your belt. Good luck.

Tough love moment. EVERYONE believes they have "stellar" ECs, everyone has shadowed many docs, and most have done multiple research projects. We are all horrible judges of our own subjective application components (I was/am). I highly doubt you are the exception to the rule.

Back to business, conditional acceptances are usually for 1-2 courses, tops (usually for one random requirement that a school has that others don't). You need to prove that you can handle rigorous science courses, and you currently have no track record in them. No school would gamble on you, even despite "strong" ECs.

Do you realize just how many pre-med courses you're lacking? It'll take upwards of two take years. Which is perfect because you can work your toosh off to pull up your GPA (and do well on the MCAT, of course).

You absolutely need to have taken the MCAT to apply, and you simply won't do well on the MCAT until you've taken these prereq classes. Schools may consider conditionally accepting you pending, say, biochem, or an english class. Even if you had somehow taken the MCAT and done well, I seriously doubt they'd even look at your application without the basic sciences.

You won't be anywhere near prepared enough to take the MCAT until you take most of your chemistry, physics, and biology. And you won't be applying until you have taken the MCAT. So by the time you apply your concern will no longer exist.

Even if you arr short a prereq or two at the time you apply, you must have completed the course successfully with it posted to your transcript by the time you apply.

Anecdote: Guy I know applied and was accepted, but was short a calculus class when the acceptance was offered. He took it in the Summer of 2011. Our school breaks Summer semester into two, eight-week blocks. He took it in the first block (late April-mid-June). But even though he was done with the calc class, the school would not post it on his transcript and he could not graduate until early August when the second block of the Summer ended. The school he was accepted at started classes a couple weeks before he would "officially" have completed the class/graduated. He spent hours on the phone--both to our undergrad and the med school--talking to the higher ups, but they wouldn't budge. Acceptance rescinded. Apply next year. The moral of the story: Don't take their course requirements lightly.
