Yeah, that's right, I'm a gunner -- but not an a**hole.

I'm going to be entering M1 this fall and it's a goal of mine to earn high honors, have the option of choosing to pursue a highly competitive specialty, and all that good stuff that comes with that.

Now, with that out of the way....

I was wondering if anyone else is planning on hard-core studying the month or two before matriculating? Similar to MCAT study schedule.

I haven't taken anatomy since my freshman year, and I want to smash the curve -- so I'm thinking about taking an intensive course this summer. Does anyone have any suggestions on courses or materials that overlap with M1 curriculum?
If anyone wants a accountability study-buddy, or share lists of study materials, PM me. :highfive:

And if anyone wants to flame me, go ahead. I'm fine busting my arse, to kick yours.

I hope OP realizes that most people that will be above him in class rank will be less gunnery than him and won't pre study

What's wrong with "pre-studying"?

A lot of medical schools offer intensive pre-matriculation programs for non-traditional students. They continue to have these programs, because they work.

Are you a non-traditional?

bro the thing you have to understand is SDN is a very "lowest common denominator" place. i mean yea the premeds here are better informed than the rest but you ahve to remember most go to unheard of schools / state schools , they see DO as absolutely equal to MD and get upset if anyone dares question that, there is a certain amount of lethargy and apathy with these forum users too. so thats why they shun gunners.

im totally with you man. these guys have a p=md mentality and dont have the same intelligence as us. and thats a fact, you can make thousands of anki cards and highlight FireCracker and take Najeeb out to dinner, but if you dont have that intelligence you wont crack honors as easily. so they can have their FM, peds, allergy, they can enjoy being woken up 3 times a night in some God foresaken IM subspecialty and dying 20 years early due to lack of sleep.. you and me and the rest of the gifted ones can go derm / ortho and not be prisoners to corporate medicine

PM me if u wanna talk more to someone who keeps it real and is not just a parrot of SDN tropes

You do you. It's a free country. But if I were you, I'd much rather spend my final summer before the craziest years of my life doing other stuff. Things like traveling, spending time with friends and family, or even working to save up money. You'll have plenty of time to study during the next few years of your life. Taking a breath of air before diving in can help prevent burnout, and quite frankly, doesn't make you more intelligent than the next medical student. Also, I'd argue that it doesn't really make you a "gunner." It just makes you ambitious. But again, there will be plenty of high achieving, ambitious folks in med school who didn't pre study who will do just as well as you and maybe even better. Such is life.

That time when you think the thread is going to be about Gunnery Sergeants ...

Hard core studying is not being a gunner. That's a bastardized definition, a colloquialism, usually used by premeds who have never yet met a gunner. In fact, a gunner is one who tries to get ahead by compromising relationships. The guy who will step on your head to climb the ladder. In fact a true gunner would rather get an A by sabotaging everyone else on the curve rather than by working harder than everyone else.

its cool that people want to shoot for the best residencies and lifestyles but its pretty funny to think about how this doesn't reflect their Personal statements. So much for self sacrifice and betterment of society 🙄

You should have posted this in your class facebook group. Maybe you'd qualify as a gunner if you did that

Ehh, but gunner's a pretty fun word, and there aren't enough true saboteurs to be able to use it frequently enough. The bastardized definition is just fine with me 🙂

Of course they work..... For non-trads that haven't taken science classes in years.... Not for someone just out of UG with a biology degree (most generic pre-med degree)

You're not a gunner. A gunner, by definition, gets ahead by gunning other people down, not by being a good student. In the sense you have described yeah I'm like you that I want to make myself as competative as possible, except I won't pre-study and will probably do just as well. Have fun not having a summer and realizing on day 3 of MS that you wasted the last summer of your youth.

I'm starting to understand why people don't like premeds.
The funny thing is, medical school actually makes a lot of them more human by beating them down and humbling the **** out of them. There is no worse a group of people than accepted premeds for that very reason

there actually are plenty of "true saboteurs" out there. More than you'd like to think. Premeds just haven't encountered them yet. But still want to use big kids words...

Good luck with that guaranteed derm residency. Bookmark and post back after your match ok?

I'm with you. I was talking with a guy at school today and he was taking about how he wanted to go into medicine but had done no prior research on it. Just felt like he wanted to 'do it'. So first I just reminded myself to stay mindful, objective and not criticize him because I know everyone has their own take on things and reasons behind their life goals.

He starts talking about how he's been wanting to 'do it' (actually keeps using this phrase analogously to becoming a doctor) for quite some time now, that it would just be awesome to diagnose patients and 'get it right' so they can become healthy again. I nod my head slightly and smile to agree, as if to say *yeah thats it mane* then I take a pause to make him think I'm seriously contemplating what he said but I'm actually thinking to myself *u have no idea what u r in 4 m8 I will wreck u I garentee and squash you like the little sadkunt you are you will NEVER, ****ING, MAKE IT!!!!*

I ask him if he's ever taken the prereqs and he has no idea, ask him if he's aware of the debt he's not sure, type of medicine? Doesn't know. I decide to save him some trouble and explain the debt, hours, residency challenges and came back full circle with the fact that his GPA is far too low and he will have to do post-bacc and even then nothing is guaranteed and now he doesn'teven want to practice medicine. 1 down.

IDK where you get the idea that med students on SDN are about the p=md life. Take a quick look at the step 1 forum and see people posting scores of >250 or GTFO. But it has been comical to watch people in my class come in saying similar things about hard work and dedication and matching ortho to then realize that they're a what was a big fish in undergrad is a below average fish here.

The craziest thing about medical school is that everyone is below average. It's the opposite of undergrad where everyone is above average.

Judging by your post, OP, I feel as if you are a person who is really concerned and serious about what you want to do in 4 years. All the more power to you. I mean hey this is going to be your life for the next 4 years might as well do your best! Good luck in med school! 🙂

I really only read the first and last sentence of OP's original post.
That being said, after reading subsequent posts... I'm really glad I have a life and am too damn busy to think like this.
