Hey guys, can anyone explain to me the protocol for the intern year for a DO student matching into an Allopathic EM residency? I called around to a few programs in MI and 2 or 3 different coordinators told me that I could only apply after beginning my required osteopathic internship year. I don't think this is correct... I know other MD residencies accept DO students straight out of 4th year and allow them to complete their required osteopathic internship at an osteopathic institution before beginning their 2nd year in the program. Also, I know some interns actually are able to waive their requirement to do an osteopathic internship year and just go ahead and do it in the MD program (in Neurology for example). Is it different for EM or is one of the above options possible? I realize I'll probably have to ask the program directors directly but I thought I would get on here and ask first.

Also, I took my USMLE Step I this year while concurrently studying for COMLEX Step II and got a 224/82. I know this score is good, not great, but as a DO how are my chances in your opinion?

Thanks for the help.

Most EM programs have an integrated intern year, meaning that you can't just do your internship elsewhere and then come in as a second year (you would miss out on too much emergency medicine in what is most places a 3 year residency). Even for programs like anesthesia you interview for and match at both your internship year and anesthesia program...you just don't start anesthesia until after intern year.

Your choices are:

1) Do an allo residency and separate internship (as you mention above).

2) Do an osteo residency.

3) Do an allopathic residency and apply for recognition of your intern year as equivalent to an osteopathic intern year (Res 42)

4) Do an allopathic residency and don't bother applying for anything if you don't think you'll have to be licensed in states that require DOs to do an osteopathic internship (PA, MI, FL....two others I believe)....but it looks like you're leaning towards MI.

As far as chances - just fine. Emergency medicine is super-DO friendly.

Michigan is one of the states that requires an osteopathic internship for osteopathic liscensure. That's why.
