confused about opening date for match applications

I'm guessing this is about USMLE score releases.

The way it works is that when you submit ERAS (i.e. upload your application), whatever scores you already have in your transcript (i.e. in late August-early September, so most people already have Step I and maybe Step II CS) are released to all programs.

You then have the option of automatically releasing all further scores, or of having the choice to do so later. Most people opt for choosing later.

This can be especially useful if you take e.g. Step II in late August, and are in a position where a Step II score can influence your app (i.e. ok but not awesome Step I or ok but not awesome grades). If you elect not to automatically release your scores, your results will be back in e.g. late Sept, and if you're happy with them, you release them (manually) at that point in time. If you're less than happy with them, you wait until interview season/match/or whenever you're asked about them. This gives you the most flexibility to help your application.

If you're taking Step II late in the season, you should probably still decide to release it manually, but it may be less helpful then as most interview offers will already have gone out. May still help/hurt for final rank list post interview.

Hope this helps!
