I'm normally confused, but this time maybe you guys can help out.
I've hunted down a few places to rotate 4th yr, but i'm having trouble figuering out which would be more "advantagous." The biggest problem, as with everything i've read on here, is that one really can't pick a bad program. Anyway, I've narrowed my list to Univ. of Pitt, Denver, and Hennepin, and Mayo.
I'm not REALLY interested in a 4 yr, program, but Denver seems like a nice city and a good reputation.
With Hennepin, I really like the program on paper, but I don;t know if i have a snowballs chance of matching at what seems pretty research oriented.
Mayo-see Hennepin.
And with Pitt, it looks good too, I think I'd like pittsburgh. I like the EMS exposure.
I worry about being good enough to get a good LOR at these highly competitive programs. If anyone could give direction, thanks!

Hennepin is really well organized for visiting students, and the rotation is set up in such a way that you will get a strong letter of rec after completing it. Schedule your rotation in any month except Dec/Jan/Feb, and you'll have a blast--they don't over work you, and Mpls is a fun city to explore.

I know you think it is "hard" to get a good letter but the truth is I felt like I got good letters more based on my attitude and the hard work I put in rather than the fact that I had Rosens, Tintinalli and the Roberts and Hedges Books memorized.

I of course am kidding about having those books memorized.

Show up, dont complain (Its amazing how many people I met did), work hard, and advocate for your patients, read some so you can defend your decisions to order tests.

I will admit the hardest part of getting a good letter in EM is working with someone enough so that they CAN write you a decent letter, as such try to work at least 3 shifts with an attending so the letter carries some weight.

don't kid like that man, got me running for my tintinalli. I did a rotation at Christiana Care, and the course director is so nice, they wrote a page for just evaluation of the EM rotation. And they stated if you want a letter from the rotation, that to tell them beforehand and they will compile and make a department letter. I did the rotation in November so was too late for me, but I thought it was really nice of them. also they try to put you with the same attending like 6 times (he/she is called your mentor).

At Cook county Dr Sherman who runs the 4th yr rotation also has an outstanding offer to all students.

LOVED my hennepin rotation...and you are also assigned a mentor that you do about 6 shifts with...i ended up doing more than half of my shifts with my mentor and he wrote me a GREAT lor!!! also minneapolis is a cool city and i wouldn't worry so much about having reasearch...if you do a great job on your rotation you will be at an advantage to match there because they actually know you, regardless of having done research or not...just my opinion🙂
