Hello, I just started working in a pharmacy and am confused about the different kinds of oral prednisolone. I know pediapred is the 5mg/5ml concentration. A doctor would have to specifically write pediapred or prednisolone 5mg/5ml on the script right?

For Orapred and Prelone, how do you know which one to dispense? I know both of these are the 15mg/5ml concentration and Orapred is the one that tastes better and contains less ethanol vs prelone. How do you know which one to dispense for each one? What will the prescriptions state?. If a scripts states prednisolone 15mg/5ml, which one do you choose? How do you know which bottle on the shelf to choose if a doctor writes for orapred or prelone. Both bottles state prednisolone 15mg/5ml.

Any info on this is appreciated (what mds will write on scripts, refrigeration, differences among the three), Tried searching this forum and internet and not a lot of clear info on this topic.

There's a great chart on pharmacist's letter showing differences among prednisolone formulations.

Comparison of oral prednisolone formulations. Pharmacist's Letter/Prescriber's Letter 2009;25(1):250106

its called stop being a bit8h and just fill it.

md writes on rx "prednisolone 15/5" .. then you know what you fill?

the answer is any bottle that says on it prednisolon 15/5 regardless of the inactive ingredients.

Let me know the answer to this as well. There is some confusion among pharmacists too. I am newly graduated and am curious to know the answer to this. wish I could view that chart, but do not have a subscription to pharmacist's letter any longer.

This. And if they write "doxycycline" don't call to find out if they really want mono or hyclate. They don't care, either is fine, but hyclate is cheaper.

If written for a child, always dispense as Orapred (unless there is a valid reason not to use sorbitol). If the MD writes for prelone, then call and change it. This is a very common mistake in the pharmacy. The biggest hurdle to getting a child to take the medicine is taste, prelone is terrible even with flavoring. If you dispense as prelone, you are asking for treatment failure.

The other day I switched prelone to orapred at 8:45 pm. I didn't call and ask, big deal?

Prednisolone (Prelone) is slightly soluble in water. Prednisolone sodium phosphate (Orapred) is freely soluble in water. Your patient is already dead.

I just like how the Orapred smells better.

Just enter the name brand when typing it and it will substitute the correct generic NCD. If they don't include a brand name give whichever you want which I'm guessing will be Orapred since it tastes better

We didn't even have generic prelone in stock. So my choice was to give the same ring but better tasting Orapred or tell them to wait till tomorrow so I could order it. It was literally 10 minutes before close.

I always dispense generic Orapred. Generic Prelone tastes god-awful.

The worst part is that when you call the doctor because you are trying to be a good pharmacist they literally have no idea what you're talking about re: prelone vs orapred. prednisolone phosphate huh, sure whatever. It's a waste of everyone time and you come off as annoying. For me, everyone gets orapred unless you're an adult and annoying me
