I've seen people talk about connections and alumni and chats with profs and all that....how does connections really help? I mean we have to go thru the job finding process anyway, does it help find you a great job or jumpstart you to greater opportunities?

Thanks🙂

Take it like this.

One of your professors who has worked at the CDC is now teaching at your school. He is still known. You take his class and get a LoR from him. When you apply for a job at the CDC, your LoR will give you a huge boost.

Everyone does favors for each other. If we get a positive recommendation from someone we know and generally like, then they would easily get the job over someone else with similar qualities.

I think connections are very important, which is why it's important to go to a school that has faculty & networking opportunities that match your interests. The Public Health world is pretty small, so if a connection can give you one leg up above the competition when looking for internships, jobs, fellowships, etc, then that will only help you.

Connections / Networking / Contacts.....they will serve you well long after you have taken your final exam and completed grad school. In fact, even a stellar education with high grades from a top school will take you only so far.
