I'm not trying to bring about a political debate but I work in a research hospital in PA where EVERYONE just about is liberal. I understand how grant funding works and how some fundamentalist conservatives don't agree with things like stem cell research and things like that. I am a fairly conservative republican who happens to be involved in biomedical research. Why are we a vast minority? I bite my tongue but get exceedingly irritated when I hear someone say how conservatives are idiots etc. From your experience, are conservative republicans rare to see in dentistry, or just research? Why IYO?

I've found most dentists I've met to be moderate democrats. I've met some republican and conservative dentists, but more often I will meet democrat and liberal dentists.

If you think about it for research, it does make sense. Research is science based, and scientific field, in general, attract more liberals than conservatives. After the 1980s with Conservatives like reagan and the formation of groups like the Moral majority, religion and conservatism began walking more and more hand in hand. Doesn't it make sense then that scientific research fields, wherein some of the basic scientific maxims more or less reject literal religious doctrine, would not appeals to religious conservatives.

Even today, with evangelical conservatives like Bush leading the way, it's hard to think of a conservative being open minded enough to scientific values and theories to embrace the field as a whole.

There also lies part of why I think dentists and physicians as well, tend to be more liberal (at least in their youth and then more moderate later in life). Dentistry and medicine are both based on biological science. While many of my christian friends are also in or pursuing these fields, those friends tend to still be more democratic or liberal as they need to be able to balance or integrate some basic scientific concepts with their devotion to religious doctrine. That's relatively hard to do if you think conservatively about religion.

Anyway...that's just my opinion about it.

In my mind stem cell research is fine, if used in the right manner. I think we still have a lot we can learn from stem cells, however there are areas in which I don't think we should venture... some areas are just a little shadier than others.

Interesting. I also work in research at a cancer hospital and I noticed the EXACT same thing. Then again, I would think Buffalo may be a bit more liberal than PA in general. I am a fairly conservative republican but in no way a member of the religious right. Stem cell research is cool in my book. I guess I'm mostly conservative on economic issues (lowering taxes, less power to the fed govt etc.) What gets to me is when people talk about what they aren't familiar with. I don't need a politician, dentist, oncologist or cancer researcher telling me ALL about global warming. Save that for the climatologists. I don't know how many conservative dentists and scientists are out there, but seems like we are in the minority.

probably just depends on where you are or how you grew up and less about your profession...come to Chicago where everyone and their mother is liberal...go to Texas and you'll find conversatives around every corner. When it's all said and done...red is red and blue is blue. But I'm not a big fan of politics so what do I know 🙄

Wow. A conservative prescription drug addict? Now THAT is interesting.

You may just find that more Republicans are closet Republicans and don't go around talking about it. Overall Doctors make up one of the highest percentage of republicans. Think about it...the liberals want to destroy privatized medicine and go socialist with it. For those who think that is best I ask you to find a country with better hospitals and medical care than the US. I work in the medical device industry and most people are very scared about democrats getting into office. Also most doctors are also afraid of the democrats because of their support of "the patients bill of rights" which highly promotes malpractice lawsuits. Doctors, Engineers, Business Owners, police, and military generally= republicans. Lawyers, Social and public organizations, Government workers, and teachers = democrat.

I concur...if you read a lot on the dental forum, as well as dentaltown, you will see that there are a lot of dentists out there that would consider themselves Republicans. Most believe in a smaller govn't (less socialized) and more power to the people (small businessman)...

You think if someone follows your posts CONSTANTLY leaving false information like this it is considered harassment? I'm getting pretty fed up.

I think the OP is making the mistake of equating liberals with democrats and conservatives with republicans. These titles are thrusted upon us by the media, but don't necessarily go together... it's not like peanut butter and jelly.

Also, I hope this discussion doesn't assume that just because someone is liberal, that person isn't religious, and just because someone is conservative that person is God-fearing. Talking about stem cells just seems to head into that direction.

my 2 cents.

Yeha...I'm a bit confused by that response.

I also agree with what someone else above said. I live in a blue state, so i think that affects the political demographics of the dental population here. Most of the dentists here, not so much the physicians (I work in a health facility), also don't believe in socialized medicine, BUT beyond that view, their general political views are leftist. I guess that is what I mean by moderate democrats: economically they lean towards the right, but on social and ethical issues they tend to lean towards the left.

The physicians I work with don't, in general and on a more surface level, mind socialized medicine. They don't think it is perfect, and the #1 complaint I hear is that it is too easily mismanaged by a inefficient and convaluted(sp?) process...but the ethical reasoning behind it...they agree with.

"If you're not liberal in your twenties you don't have a heart. If you're not conservative in your forties you don't have a brain".

Oh, no. Maybe DDSBound would like me to explain the situation to you. I'm only doing this because I don't think he is fit to be a practitioner of any sort. First, he has been completely antagonizing the medical forums. A complete jerk going on and on about how he is going to be an oral surgeon and a DDS/MD whatever. So I did some searching and found another forum that used DDSBound as a screen name. He only left one post and then vanished. The post was about how he was prescribed OxyContin awhile back and now when he doesn't use it, he can't stop "shaking." So, he gets it from a friend of his that works in a pharmacy. He was requesting a schedule to break him of this cycle. In addition he can't sleep (maybe from this drug, I don't know) so he uses nyquil then in the AM he feels tired and hungover, so he uses nodoze. I do NOT want this guy working on my teeth. I feel he is unfit for this field. He will be working with patients! It is just ridiculous! In the med forum someone even said "makes sense now, he is not only self medicating with OTC drugs but self medicating under the counter as well." It's true! It should be exposed.

I hate to get involved here, but truthfully RootCanal, it is none of your business what DDSBound is doing. It is sort of silly to google search people and spread rumors that you haven't even confirmed. If there is some sort of problem that keeps someone from doing a decent job, they won't get their license. If they are competent then they will. No one is perfect and no one should judge another without knowing the complete story.

Hey, Matlock, great job exposing this irrefutable proof that DDSBound is a drug addict. Maybe you should consider getting a Private Investigator license. You freakin' genius, you! :bullcrap:
