Hello, this is my first post on Student Doctor.

A year ago I graduated from the University of Wisconsin with a degree in Microbiology. Now I am looking to return to school to pursue either Pharmacy or Medicine. I am just wondering what kind of options I might have at getting in.

BS in Microbiology from UW-Madison
GPA: 3.98
Little volunteer or shadowing experience, but I did work in an Infectious Disease research lab for 4 years. It didn't have very much patient contact and I didn't publish, but it did give me experience.
I haven't taken the MCAT or the PCAT as of yet.
I was not involved in may clubs because of my job, but I did work as a RA for a year which had a lot of leadership to go with it.

Thanks for your input!

Your GPA is really good for med school. I would go to med school with that GPA + you have a great background in research. Gl to you on w/e you decide to pursue.

With credentials like that, I would shoot for med school.

First off, from a fellow UW alumnus, welcome to SDN! Second, I think it would be of your best interest to ponder over what you are looking for in a career and whether or not pharmacy or medicine will let you address those goals. Once you figure that out, aggressively pursue your ambitions! Third, I highly suggest obtaining a healthcare volunteer position. If you decide on pharmacy, pharmacy experience is going to be a major plus, but with your GPA I don't think it is necessary. Any type of healthcare experience is going to help. If you are still in the Madison area, UW Health presents a great opportunity, but the duration of the process to start can be rather long. Good luck with your endeavors!

Definitely agree with this. You've got to figure out which career would make you happy, because it's not the same for everyone. Researching the careers, and thinking about which is a better fit for you in theory, might work. But it is also very helpful for most people to get firsthand experience (like working or volunteering in the setting), because you can end up totally changing your mind based on something you didn't realize before.

Especially if you get relevant volunteer experience and do pretty well on MCAT/PCAT, I think you would have a great shot at either pharm school or med school with those stats. But both of them are long, expensive paths. So make sure you know the one you really want before you start down that path!

With ur stats, u should not have a problem for med or pharm school. Decide on what interests you more and makes you happy. Then go for it. If u don't know the difference between med and pharmacy. List ur career interests here, we can help u decide which path to take. The best profession for you is the one that meets ur personality, goals and interests.
