Hello as the title suggests I'm considering volunteering at a local Hospice near me and I was just wondering what I would expect from other people who have volunteered at those. As of right now I feel as though its one of my only options in terms of volunteering because due to some health risks around my school there isn't much in terms of volunteering at places such as nursing homes. My mother has been a nurse her whole life and has done ICU and Hospice and she's the one who recommended it but again now I'm just asking for other opinions on the matter. I apologize for how verbose this is. Thanks again!

It's a great experience, but it takes some getting used to.

I have hundreds of hours of volunteering at a large health system's hospice and it has been a very rewarding and humbling experience.

Sounds like a great opportunity. You will see some very sick patients, obviously, and learn a lot about the humanity and compassion side of medicine. I would imagine any medical admissions officer would view such an experience favorably.

It's very depressing. If you are an emotional person like me, it'll be very hard to get used to it. But... if you CAN handle it, the experience is amazing. Being there, to show support, encouragement and comfort to people in their last days, is a very meaningful experience. I think you should definitely do it!

Its also worthwhile because you get to see the same people each time you volunteer (at least where I am). I volunteered in a hospital for almost two years and everytime I never saw the same patients. Here you can actually get to know them more which makes it more enjoyable. At the hospice I've been seeing the same people every week I go which makes it better for them and for you as they look forward to having a visitor
