So recently I've been trying to figure what I should I do and what path would be best to take to get into doctoral programs. I realized probably the best idea is to contact the schools directly I applied to directly especially if a lot of them I would consider reapplying to. I am not sure on who is best to contact as far as figuring out what was lacking in my application and what I could do that would be most beneficial to improve it, would it be the director of the program who would be best to contact? I know the decision is generally made by a committee (at least the programs I applied to since I didn't apply directly to any professor's labs)

I would, in fact, strongly suggest that you contact the POI or the program director. It all depends on the pull of the POI and the process in which students are evaluated.

Some schools/directors/POI's will tell you honestly not to bother, you aren't what they are looking for. Others will tell you what they want you to do to strengthen your application, this is a good sign, do what they tell you and apply again.

I did, and others have, done exactly this and have been rewarded with acceptances at very reputable programs. I suggest you don't let the opportunity to go wasted.

In my case, UT Austin (clinical) and Arizona State University (clinical), told me straight up, thanks but no thanks. Other programs told me what to strengthen, I was interviewed by these programs and accepted by 2 of them.

You have nothing to lose.
