My home university requires students to pay continuing student fees (about $5000) while we're on internship. I'm curious if other universities charge similar fees and if students have had any success getting these waived.
We have to pay tuition, though it's less than regular tuition because it's the rate for part-time students. I believe we end up paying about $3500 in total that year.
Just adding-- My institution is fully funded, but it's a Canadian program, and we tend to do things a little differently here. Graduate students receive fairly large stipends, and pay both tuition + living expenses out of that. Tuition remission is not the norm here, which is why we still have to pay tuition while on internship. There are no additional "fees" other than tuition, which is required to remain enrolled.
Seems popular with the Psy.D. programs, and quite common with them, to charge fees. It's also B.S., but if they are the one's giving you the degree, you have to play along. As for me, well I don't pay any fees but that's a different ball of wax, none of our civilian students pay fees either though.
My clinical program (phd) is at a major state university. We do not have to pay any fees while on internship.
The only exception to this is if you still need to defend your dissertation, then you have to be registered for a certain number of credits during the semester in which you defend. (this would typically be covered by a TA/RA but since you give up these positions to go on internship, it would come out of pocket or fin aid).

Thanks for the the feedback, everyone. It's good to know that some programs don't require students to pay fees at all. That's pretty amazing. I'm in a Ph.D. program at a private university. We all get tuition remission . . . until internship year. And even students who have defended their dissertations have to pay the continuing student fee, which is pretty nonsensical.
