I want to make sure if I understand the concept correctly. In COHORT, controls should not be exposed. While in CASE-CONTROL, controls should not be selected based on exposure status, hence heterogeneous group (exposed and non-exposed)?

Yes, in a cohort study you classify based on exposure and follow/evaluate for disease. In a case control you classify based on disease and then evaluate for exposure.
