Hi...I am new to this site, applied to UCSF, USC, and UCSD & still waiting for a response. Now this might seem like a stupid question, but I know for interviews we will need to know controversial drugs of this year. Of course I know of a few but I just wanted to make sure there isn't any MAJOR drug I am missing. Can anyone throw out some drugs I can do research on, or at least point me in the right direction of finding the names of these drugs? I looked online under "controversial drugs of 2007" but really didn't find anything. Same with issues in healthcare...I know of a few but would love to be able to look somewhere with a list of all current topics regarding this. Any suggestions??? Thanks so much

Jessica

Not sure this helps, but on the top of my head. . . Plan B, Pseudoephdrine, and Childrens Cold and Flu products in terms of over the counter product.

Look up information on the drug Avandia. They were talking about putting it off the market because ill side effects. I believe the news made a report about it over the summer. When I volunteered at a pharmacy this past summer I was required to give an updated sheet about the drug about its recent studies everytime I had to give patients their refills on Avandia.

thanks for the help, any others would certainly be appreciated....what about current issues in healthcare? Of course I don't want the answers to my questions given to me but do you know where I can find a list of important topics??? like general stuff such as medicare, possibility of universal health insurance i understand, I just don't want to be missing anything big

read the news online as much as you can - there is usually a lot of stuff there about current health care issues.

Also there is Exubera (inhaled insulin) that was pulled off the market a month or so ago b/c Phizer was not making enough money The data was not very convincing that it was beneficial over injections or the pump anyways....

I've had 3 interviews and asked my friends who had other interviews and not one school asked about these. They want to know you and what you have done. You are not in a stage to know specifics about drugs. But that is just from my experience.

don't forget viagra which is causing vision and hearing problems.

oxycontin for its addiction and rash of robberies.

thanks for all the help....i know that there is a possibility this question will not be asked, but I just want to be as prepared as I can be!

There are some who say that Pfizer just did not allocate enough to advertise it. It is a novel method of delivery of biopharmaceuticals, and I'm sure we'll see that sort of dosage form again in the future. The CEO of that company which developed the apparatus which was used to administer Exubera continues to invest in that product, with good cause.

Exubera was a good idea in my opinion, but as the previous poster stated it wasn't advertised right. Patients for the most part never even knew it existed so how could they ask their doctor about it? They couldn't. Insulin also maybe a really hard item to market in terms of changing the method of delivery from injections to inhalations. A lot of old people would probably be really skeptical of the inhalation method and would probably resist the change...and not to mention its insanely high price. 🙄
