Check out this book about Cook County hospital: _The Hospital_ by Sydney Lewis.

It's fairly accurate but downplays some of the more malignant aspects.

It's called Stroger now and they have a brand new building right next door to the old one.

Passing rate on the boards has been 100% for the past 3 years....with all of the graduates having passed on the first attempt. As far as the number of cases.....you'll be way prepared once you are done...however.... The attendings AND residents both say that for the most part they are not overworked and on most days they get out at 3-3:30. 7 calls a month and it goes by 1st call, 2nd call and 3rd call. You do get one golden weekend a month meaning that you are on call on Thursday and then have friday-sunday off. I was really impressed overall with cook county, especially with their pain program....AND they do interview US grads.
