Cooking after medschool/in residency

I've made goals to try to learn how to cook many times (summer before med school, MS1, summer after MS1,...now an MS4) and/or learn to use a crockpot, and alas did not have the discipline to continue my attempts after like day 1. I'll try again maybe post-match or after graduation? I was wondering if there's anyone who never really learned how to cook before graduating med school or before residency, and how did you guys "fare"? Did you guys just go to the cafeteria most days in med school? How about residency? (Open to all students, residents, and attendings) Thanks in advance!

Recipe sharing is strongly encouraged (easy ones...) 🙂

Edit: one thing that prevented me from learning how to cook is I eat a lot... so one small container of spaghetti or whatever will leave me feeling 30% full...

The best way to learn to cook is to mess up. Over salt your food, taste something atrocious, etc.

It amazes me how people have made it to adulthood without learning to cook. A main goal of a parent should be to teach their children before turning them loose on the world.
 
I learned to cook before medical school by subscribing to Cook's Illustrated. Sometimes the recipes are a little bit complicated, but they always come out great and you'll learn some universal techniques, tips, and tricks along the way. Also, they have a very scientific approach to cooking and sometimes even explain the molecular biology involved. Maybe get the magazine for one year, and try to make one or two things in each issue.

I am on a 'cooking quest' right now. I never took home economics but I am a true homebody. Just like to study and say home.
I recently discovered the 'joy of cooking' book. Love it. I learn so much relevant medical stuff in there. Tempeh made from Rhizopus?

My real motivation was this though🙂
I went to so many drug dinners my 3-4 yrs that I never had to cook for myself. Then thought whoa.. doctors are supposed to have money and not supposed to do anything for themselves? Cook, clean, make clothes.

I am a do it yourself person at heart.

I know some cities have 'cooking classes'
But I am kinda just teaching myself now..

When I was first learning to cook, I learned 7 recipes. I made them over and over again until I added one new recipe until I felt comfortable just reading a recipe. I made pork in the Crock-Pot, enough pasta sauce to make spaghetti and lasagna, tuna casserole, a curry, etc. It doesn't have to be fancy, just something you are willing to eat. Pinterest has tons of recipes to make on a Sunday then throw them in the Crock-Pot each weekday. Learning to cook is simple, you don't need to be an expert- just willing to eat what you make.
