Cornell Med 2007 Class ROLL CALL!!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
hehe my second day on sdn with a couple posts, and already i have stirred up a lil tiff! thanks for the defense erich...=) i just mentioned sasha/digweed, DT, and porter because i think they're talented as DJs and producers (not necessarily because of their "global underground" title)-- and they are a few of my fav spinners. not too many djs can pull off harmonic mixing (which involves being consciously aware of how much a pitch bend of - 3%, for example, corresponds to in terms of key shifts..and then being able to mix records that are harmonically compatible after they have been beat-matched -- many DJs just put down records without really paying attention to key signatures and consonance)...but that's what underlies the successful progression of these DJs' sets. rhythmically, harmonically, and melodically, they take you on an intense journey -- and that's what i like about them. for me, it doesn't matter whether the venue has a younger clientele, or is alcohol-free...it's all about the music 🙂 that's just me tho...
anyways, i'm actually more into breakbeats -- like Hybrid, Hyper, BT, Icey... chronic -- since you know the scene better in nyc, where can i find breaks venues? esp. nu-skool, progressive, funky breaks? also, is there a psytrance/goa club? thanks =)

my apologies if i veered this thread off the original topic...for those of you who received a flyer about the orientation days, did you get it via snail-mail? i don't think i got anything yet...also, i was wondering -- is there a kitchen on each floor? or only on floors 5-9...i forgot how the dorms looked (it was a while back since my interview day, and i missed the second look). i think i might just depend on the yummy sushi that's nearby =)

This is quickly becoming a turntablist thread. That's the last thing I ever thought would happen. 🙂

Can't let the Cornell thread slip into the SDN vortex can we? How is everyone doing out there? Anybody new off the waitlist?

werd...so when are ppl going to start filtering into the big city? anyone else going to be doing the urban orientation? 😉

i'll be there a week before, since a buddy of mine is getting married in Crooklyn 😀

just got a new comp for med skool, and buying some other BS for this fall, so i'm getting pumped. and, i met jot before he heads out for summer rotations today, so i can say i've physically seen at least one future classmate 😛

i think i lost that paper on the orientation activities....weren't we supposed to send a check to someone?

I'll be rolling into town on the 15th of Aug for the urban orientation. It has just recently hit me that med school is starting soon, which has made me excited but at the same time go "Oh my God I'm starting my professional career and moving to NYC!" What an adjustment! Life as I knew it is gonna be changin' and its crazy to think about it.

How do any out-of-towners like myself envision their lives being in NY? I look forward to taking up squash, weekend pub crawls, seeing a show at least once a month, and researching all the eccentric nooks, crannies and hole in the wall places in NY then searching them out. Hope med school doesn't get too much in the way... 🙂

ya...i'm getting totally psyched for it too...getting a new comp soon, and will be sure to have a kickass sound card to go with it...lookin at a yamaha, maybe...but that's another ...hmm, $600 for it alone? hmm...and enough cpu to operate Cubase, Logic, and i guess a couple medical-related programs as well 🙂

DW--how's jot? i've been chatting with him a lil on IM...heard in advance that he was going to be meeting up with you, and he seemed pretty excited. and ya, there is a check we do have to send in for $15 -- but i'm not quite sure what the money is for, since we have to pay for all transportation/meals/expenses ourselves...

see you guys in a few weeks! =)

What are Cubase and Logic? Do tell.

logic and cubase are two awesome sequencing programs for music production...picked em up yesterday, along w/a lot of sick plugins. i love plugins haha 🙂

are most ppl here getting MACs/PCs? i'm probably going for PC

i just a brand new pc from best buy for school 😀

2.4 ghz processor, 80 gig hard drive, 512 RAM, CD and DVD RW drives, 17 inch flat screen monitor, color printer and a 3 year in home repair, for about half as much as i bought my last PC almost 5 years ago. i love it 😀

I got an S and I have no idea why. I'm no Hemingway that's for sure. I believe that its nice to have, but no one really cares about it too much. I know Stanford averages it in, but I don't know about Cornell.

Today... I buy my computer! 17 inch flat screen might be too pricy for me. Where did you get that deal, DW? I'm looking to spend 1500 tops.

iamhere -- i don't think the writing sample can hurt you too much...i did the same as snoopdizzle, but i think your personal statement and other essays are much more important and would offset an off-writing sample...

DW...nice deal! i'm also curious to see where you got it

www.bestbuy.com i caught some 4th of july deals. you can get something sweet for way less than 1500 snoopdizzle, i didnt even pay close to 1K for mine.

also, one thing you might want to consider, if you would want to take out a little extra student loan money to pay for your computer, you would have to wait until we move in to olin to purchase it and then gladys could re-adjust your first year budget accordingly.

btw, sorry if i'm confusing you with "flat screen" versus "LCD screen"....big difference 🙂

also, are any of you considering replacing your olin hall prison issue cots with something else? I'm a pretty big guy so the beds they provide us probably wont cut it, so i'm thinking of getting a futon or something., and my buddy who is a third year there says the olin beds can be broken down and tucked in the corner pretty easily.

and dont sweat the writing sample too much there, i really dont think many schools will hold back an otherwise great application because of a horribly subjective writing score. they gave me an "R" and my essays were complete crap

I'm guessing here but I think he got it at "Best Buy"...?? 😉

haha wooops...nice point tbw...lol, i guess i skimmed the post and thought DW had written "i just bought a brand new pc for the best buy"

hmm ya, i heard DW is quite a big guy...worst comes to worst, you can maybe persuade cornell to get u 2 beds, put them together, and sleep diagonally -- that's what my 6'8" ex-bf did in college to start out with.

Hmmm, yet more mail from Cornell...and stuff I need to respond to 🙂

Now I need to know both my name and my jacket size.

Who is going on the boatride on the 19th?

black and white passport photo? 🙁 hmmm, color I have tons of, but black and white?

hmm did everyone get something in the mail from cornell recently? i haven't gotten anything new from them...tbw -- what was in that latest packet? the last time cornell tried to send me something, it got bounced back to them and they had to resend it a week later....grrrrr

oh and that boat cruise sounds like a lot of fun! i suppose the details are in that mail that i didn't get yet...lol...but i'm def in for that =)

i hope the md/phds are having a blast out there...see y'all soon enough!

trance: I just got the packet today in the 2nd post. it was mailed on the 3rd. theres not much in it, just a tentative schedule for orientation, a request for a b&w passport photo for their book, and your jacket size, etc for the white coat ceremony. it'll prolly arrive tomorrow if you don't have it today...

okie coo...thanks tbw 🙂

ahh, here am i sitting on a page of color passport photos that i never ended up using during the application cycle, and they want black and white. cheap bastards! .......its like ra-i-ain........on your wedding day............... 😛

I am sooooo down for the boatride though 😀

anyone know what bank i should go with in NYC? I dont think first union/wachovia, which I have currently, is a player in that market......

hope you md/phd kids are having fun 🙂

Chase and Citibank are the closest. Come to think of it, I haven't seen many others.

No Wachovias up here (believe me, I've looked). They haven't merged with First Union yet. Regardless, the closest one still a good distance from Olin.

Hmm, well even though you might not be physically close to the first union, I dont think you're 100 percent accurate on this one. While the name change hasnt hit most of the northeast branches like they have in the south (when i was in atlanta all the first unions had been renamed wachovia by the winter), you should be able to bank at first union with a wachovia account (make deposits, atm withdrawals without surcharge, walk up teller service, the whole shebang). At least they let me do this in the philly branches, so i'd give that first union you found a shot....

how's that summer program going?

Well, if you don't mind travelling to Penn station to use an First Union ATM, or to NJ to do the whole teller stuff, then more power to you. They're supposed to switch over here sometime this summer, so you shouldn't have a problem in August or September. I can go one summer w/o using a bank account....

Things are going well here so far. I haven't been completely turned off to lab work, which I kind of expected. We haven't started the clinical stuff yet. I'm supposed to take a mock interview and practice MCAT in a couple of weeks... its going to be pretty scary considering I haven't taken the vast majority of my prereqs.

....shutting up...

doing a little thread CPR.....

So, how are all my fellow Cornellians doing in our last month before med skool? Do we have any new lurkers or people pulled off the waitlist recently?

Just got my housing assignment today, what floor are you guys gonna be on? I'm on the 7th....... 😎

"486 dollars a month" and "Upper East Side of Manhattan"...still not connecting in my head........

DW - I'm in 721. Btw - the kitchen on our floor is a mess

Yeah, i'm not too sure how I feel about communal kitchens, i might invest in a compact refrigerator for my room........

Hey DW, I would encourage you to hold out till you get on campus...a lot of people usually sell their fridges pretty cheap when movin' from Olin to Lasdon. my old roommate had bought one for $25 bucks and it worked great for 4 years.

Congrats once again to all the Cornellians.

you can very easily buy your own bed or futon (just take measurements first...the olin rooms can get REALLY tight really quick). if you put in a service order in Olin, the facilities people will actually cart your olin cot away so you don't have to tuck it anywhere.

There's tons of banks in the Cornell neighborhood. Citibank is one block away on 69th and First Ave. Chase is 72nd and First Ave...those banks are pretty good, but I don't know how good their student banking is. Generally they require $$$ for a decent account. Chase is definitely much more of a "high rollers" bank.

There is an HSBC on 68th and 3rd avenue which, at least when I was a student there, had great student banking - combined no fee checking and savings, and i only had to keep minimum $100 in the account...probably worth looking into.

THere is a North Fork bank on 69th and 3rd...don't know what their rates are.

There is a Washington Mutual on 3rd ave betw 69th and 70th...they just opened so I don't know too much about it.

You can probably look 'em up online and compare rates...or drop 'em a message.

(by the way, i know it's my third consecutive post...i've been away from the Forums for a while)

🙂

hey dw -
citibank has a deal with cornell - you get the premium account for free / no min balance - and it is about 200 yards from olin

the futon thing is super doable - i have the bed in pieces in my room and you won't be able to find it

if you want to join a gym in the area new york health and racquet cllub has a deal with cornell for 50% off membership

there aer tons of other deals etc... that cornell has with surrounding services

tons of people are selling their fridges/toasters/microwaves - deefinatley don't buy until you get here

vixenell - are oyu in olin?

it's been great so far - there is so much to do around here you couldn't possibly get bored.

stop in on the 5th floor ...

I'm in olin...room 607. They made our rooms into makeshift doubles (ie, regular single plus a bed), so its pretty cramped. Livable, I suppose, since I don't spend much time there. It'd be nice to have my own desk, though...

Where are you guys doing your first rotation?

Oh yeah... definately get your own fridge... I've had many a meal (even half eaten ones) stolen. Besides, the communal kitchen tends to be on the gross side on every floor.

hmm, thats kinda random...i just got move from the 7th floor to the 9th floor. dont know the rhyme or reason behind that, ahh well, anyone else gettin shuffled around here? 😕

just 10 days till move in! 😀

I think your room #/floor level depends on how hot the admissions think your photo is (they don't admit anyone under a 3 which is why there are no dorms on those floors). Obviously they decided that photocopy of a photo you sent in for the facebook was 'hotter' than your original application shot and you got moved up the rankings. 😉

Darn it, I'm still only an '8' 🙁

hehe, i dont know about myself, but that would explain why trance-dj is on the 9th floor 😀

hmm, i always wondered why we started at floor five...i guess they stick all those unattractive grad students on the lower levels
