I am interviewing at all three coming up, and I am hoping to find out if anyone knows the spread of married + kids to single residents in the programs? I realize NYC is expensive for a family, but I am just trying to get an idea.

Can anyone comment on moonlighting opportunities for the programs? Is that mainly how people afford to live there even with the subsidized housing?

Anyone care to offer interview impressions of the programs from this year's trail?

You can make good money moonlighting at Mt SInai (in-house). I've seen some of their resident housing and its nice but it's still expensive.

Cornell-> Unsure of moonlighting opportunities. Subsidized housing thats nice and across the street from the hospital but also expensive. If you go a few blocks north you can do cheaper.

NYU-> no subsized housing but pays the most out of the 3. Surrounding area rents have dramatically increased in last few years.

There's married + kids in every nyc program but not as many as you would see in a place like Penn State or New Brunswick for obvious reasons. Unless your spouse has a full time well paying job, raising a family in Manhattan on a residents salary would be a nightmare

Is NYU still interviewing?

Didn't they shut down that place after the hurricane?

Heard from fellow applicant along the interview trail they rented out 2 floors of a hotel in midtown and are interviewing there. Also heard rumors Bellevue is closed "indefinitely" but will be back by Jan/Feb next year.

Curious to hear how others think the training at NYU for this year's applicants will be affected by the hospital setback (obviously nobody knows for sure...)

They still have about 1.5 years to improve things until this years applicants even step foot into the program. I doubt current applicants will be affected negatively.

Mount Sinai pays very well--I think it's overtime pay, not moonlighting, though.
I am married and a mother of 2 little children. My husband has a well-paying job, and we own an apartment in the Bronx. You don't have to live in Manhattan. The outer boroughs are much cheaper. Western Queens (e.g., Astoria, LIC) and much of the Bronx are close enough to Sinai and Cornell. NYU is closer to Brooklyn, but housing in Brooklyn is very expensive.
I haven't met any residents from the programs you mentioned, so I don't know how many are married or have kids, but I've met quite a few resident-fathers in anesthesia and many fathers on the interview trail (only one other mother, though).
Good luck!

I met a guy at an interview last week who has similar stats to mine and still hasn't heard from NYU. He heard (from whom, I don't know) that their review process has slowed because of the hurricane and that they will be sending more interviews. I hope that's true!
