hey guys I have to make an undergrad deposit soon and need some advice on what to do.
I have the option to attend Cornell (CALS) on a Pre-Med track or go to the Sophie Davis school of biomedical education at City College BS/MD

Sophie Davis
-No Mcat
-guaranteed seat to cuny School of med
-BS in 3 years and med for the next 4
-virtually no debt for the first 3 years

Cornell
-name, prestige
-good track record with mcat and end school acceptances
-debt, but nothing I’m too worried about

With both of these choices in mind, should I pursue a degree at Cornell and open up my opportunities to more prestigious med schools and residencies, or go to Sophie , which is now affiliated with CUNY med and since it’s New won’t graduate it’s first class until 2020 (so no stats, rankings).
Also, I’ve been reading that Cornell pre med is rough.
My main thing with Sophie is the name and I don’t want to put myself at a disadvantage for residencies. Does name matter that much?

In previous years the prestige of where your undergrad was completed was only important to private institutions. However, the most recent data from the AAMC shows that that has moved from the Highest Importance Ratings section to the Lowest Importance rating. The most important thing in this decision is to go to the school where you feel you will be able to excel. If you feel you can excel at Cornell and that they have the student support services that would be helpful in your academic journey then by all means go to that school.

If you feel you will do better and be better prepared for medical school at the other school then go there. I believe it is also possible to terminate your agreement with the medical school if you chose too. You would lose your seat but you would be able to apply.

I personally would rather attend a medical school that has graduated a few classes so that residency directors know the quality of applicants a school provides.

If I were in your shoes, I'd probably go to Cornell (as long as I believe in my ability to excel there).

If finances are similar, I would also choose Cornell. A lot of people going into college are dead set on becoming a physician. God forbid you change your mind but if you do, a degree from Cornell will set you up so much better for whatever career you end up choosing. I was premed at Cornell and while it was certainly hard, I had an amazing experience and would definitely do it again. I also feel like I have the perfect formula for how to get a high GPA as a premed coming out of Cornell lol. Feel free to DM me if you have any specific questions.
