I am surprised that New York isn't the most expensive. Does the bay area have a high cost of living or is it just that tuition is more?

I know New York is bad, but the Bay area Cost of living is horrible. I went to this website where I punched in my current income and what it needs to be to maintain the same quality of life. I needed a 30k increase in income to maintain the same QOL. The only good thing is that the pay is generally a little more.
