So I've been asked by one of my band directors to assist with the Youth Wind Ensemble that my school runs. The goal of this wind ensemble is to expose musically gifted kids in the community to challenging music that they might not otherwise be exposed to due to the limitations of high school bands, as well as the fact that there isn't really another one of these sorts of ensembles that takes the best of the best from the region in the area. Basically what I'm being asked to do is to help fill out a section that has a shortage of players and encourage the high school musicians to keep pursuing music, possibly try to get them interested in applying/attending my school, and to help them grow musically. I feel like this sounds like community service, what do you guys think?

If you are doing something that sounds like a job, but aren't getting paid for it, I'd say it counts as community service.

If your role is to play music with some HS kids while serving as a role model for them you could call in volunteer, non-clinical or you could call it artistic pursuit. I'm thinking you already have plenty of activities in the artistic pursuits section and you are feeling light in the community service department. I think that it is a stretch if most of your role is "filling in" in the violin section or whatever but if you are mentoring, tutoring, etc as part of the program then the dynamic shifts a bit.

Could you clear up exactly what your role is? Are you expected to play with the rest as a benefit or are you expected to both play and serve as a mentor?
