Couldn't get in to dental school and perhaps won't get into a masters program?

So I applied late last year to all the dental schools in California and got rejected to all of them. I guess it's understandable with such a low GPA but I didn't even get any interviews!

I recently graduated from UOP with a BS in Biology and am now working back at home as a receptionist in a dental office but I still would like to know what I could do to fix my application. I was thinking of a masters program but looking at biology masters requirements for several schools in california, I don't seem to qualify for that either because of my low GPA. My freshman and sophomore year took a really heavy toll on my GPA and although I did improve during my last year at school it wasn't enough to boost things up. The things is I know I can do a lot better now. I improved a lot my last year at school and am much more focused and motivated than before.

What are my options at this point? I now feel a bit stranded 🙁

Would an informal post-bacc be a good option? I had a lot of C's in pretty much all of my biology courses. If I were to retake bio classes at another four year university how efficient would that be at improving my GPA (assuming I got A's)?

You can quite easily get that GPA above 3.0 by taking on more science courses as a post-bacc. How does your science GPA look? Your DAT is good enough in most cases for average applicants (those with c/sGPA above 3.4) but not quite strong enough to overlook your current GPA which is inadequate.

Here's a pathway for you to consider:
Informal Post-Bacc to raise your GPA to above 3.0,; next, apply to either a formal post-bac program or SMP; kill it (i.e. GPA as close to 4.0 as possible); then apply to many programs and do so early (i.e. June for first batch).

Just to add, certain SMPs have strong ties to the dental school where they are offered. Louisville is a good example: couple of people from my class finished SMPs here and then subsequently got into our dental school. A handful of professors that taught SMP courses are also on the admission committee which definitely would help.

Great thanks! I'm liking that plan. Do you think it would be enough to just raise my undergraduate GPA and reapply or would it be better to first raise my GPA then go for a masters then reapply?

my science GPA is around a 2.7 now. Would you recommend retaking the bio classes I got a C in or just taking other kinds of biology classes?

Are there any dental oriented SMPs in California?

With stats like yours you can't be picky, you may need to find programs outside of California. I also recommend when you do reapply applying to more than just your state schools as well. I'm from Iowa and went to Barry in Miami, biomedical science masters. All of us were med/dental reapplicants or non-trads. Everyone I knew got into school this past cycle.

Don't give up. I had a 2.97 sGPA and oGPA 3.16, got a 4.0 in my masters program and am now in my second week of dental school. Work hard and you'll get there, good luck!

How did it end up? Did you get into the dental school finally!?
