Hey,

is specializing in something (low vision, contact lens, peds, whatever) a good idea? some optometrists told me that most of the specialities are not utilitzed in practice

also, why are people resistant to answering questions about their personal salary? not critizing or anything but it adds alot of credibility to tony-robbins style chest beating about the succesfulness of their practice when in fact they might be on the verge of bankrupcy or make 30k net a year working 70 hours a week. I know for a fact people tend to do this especially on internet forums

success stories on various forums are like "I used my business skills and implausibly risky economic theories to find a secret market niche that nobody has found before" and then when asked what they make its like "no comment". its a internet forum and people dont even know their real names, why the secrecy?

hahaahahahahahahaahah i make a million dollars on 1 work day a YEAR.

believe me? thats why posting salary on the internet is useless.

Exactly. I've seen all kinds of salary figures thrown around here. Its usually a friend of someone's cousin who makes a billion dollars as a dentist, lawyer, accountant or some other non-optometry field. I don't believe any of it.

Sorry if this sounds harsh and I don't mean to be...

Posting your salary online is an uncomfortable proposition. Why not post your credit card numbers and your social security number as well? Because there is a chance people will tag the person to the post, that's why.

Besides, do you go around telling everyone about your personal life? If anyone asks what your salary is, isn't it considered rude?

Discussing one's own salary just isn't open for public debate.

With that said... As you can see... I am not afraid to announce to the world who I am, where I am, and what I do for a living. You can even see what I look like. My question is: Why don't more people do this? I want people to know the person behind the post. Call me up if you want to talk about anything. Why not? Why are people afraid to announce who they are? If I was running this website, I would require a real name to be attached to every post. 😱

Optometry is very much like law in the sense that there are plenty of ODs out there making huge, over the top money and there are plenty out there who are making much more modest incomes, in the area of 80-90k per year.

The key in this field is to be the owner. I don't know of a single solitary OD who makes the "big" money who doesn't own their own practice.

There also aren't too many employees of any other business who make the big money either.

BE THE BOSS!

You know, it's interesting that being a capitalist country--the richest one in the world--I don't think secondary schools and even professional colleges like optometry do enough to instill the entrepreneurial spirit in people. Our OD schools always seem to take it from the professional side rather than the business side.

Do any OD schools require any business training say from the school of business, if there is one?

Optometry really, really needs this to survive. Without private practice, optometry to me won't really be a profession.
