My wife and I are planning to couples match.
We applied to around 30 programs. We have both been getting interview invites, but only one (1) so far is in the same city/hospital.

Can someone suggest an appropriate way of asking programs to evaluate application of her or me so we can get more interviews in the same city/hospital?

Should I contact the residency director at program that invited me, asking for him to contact the residency director at my wife's department? Or is there a simpler way to handle this?

I think it's too early for any action on your part yet. Programs review applications/invite applicants at different paces, and contact from you, your wife, or pressure from a PD this early in the process would not likely be welcome. I wouldn't recommend making calls until mid October.
