I want to do research this summer in either Anesthesiology or EM (my two favorite specialties). My fiance wants to go into Pathology. From what I can see, there are more hospitals that combine residency positions in anes & path than em & path. So my question is this: If I want to increase the likelihood of us matching at a hospital in the south (will not apply to northern states - too cold), would anesthesiology give me better odds?

Also, does anyone recommend research in either area? Anything really interesting anyone can recommend? Thanks

If you're still a premed, you probably don't know what you'll want to do.

If I a MS3 comes to me saying "anesthesia or EM", I say go do Anesthesia. If you would even consider it, your personality is probably not right for EM.

TexPreMed,
You should do a residency in the field in which you want to practice for the rest of your life, not the field it would be easiest to match into. With either choice, you can do things to maximize your chance of couples matching (applying to lots of programs, different tier programs, letting programs know you are couples matching).

It seems pretty premature to be concerned about this as a pre-med.

In any case, why not do a research project in something that could be helpful in applying to either specialty?
