Hello All,
First off gotta say thanks to all the posters esp. UTsouthwestern, Skip, sevo, timtye, and all the rest for your posts. I dont think it said enough, that you guys advice really helps us all out alot! But enough of the mushy stuff on with the questions.....

I guess after coming home everyday and exclaiming to my wife how great anesthesia is, and after she completed her anesthesia rotation, we both have now decided that gas is the way to go for the both of us!

My question is though, how common is it for couples to both match into gas together? Anybody know of husband wife duo's in gas programs? Will this make it easier or harder for us to match? Any thoughts would be appreciated!

Thank you for the nice comments. I enjoy discussions on this site.

Congrats on entering the field of anesthesia.
I have never heard of two people matching into the same program. As a guess it might be easier to accomplish if you two matched in a city with multiple programs, eg Chicago. Any other thoughts?

I know we have had couples in the past at our program, but haven't had couples match requests for both partners to be in anesthesia in recent years. We did accept a couples match for us and general surgery.

As is always the case with couples matching, you have to be honest about which partner is the stronger candidate and look more toward the partner's choices for the couples match. Definitely contact all of the programs you are strongly interested in and let them know that you are doing a couples match and would really love to be at that particular program(s).

It would definitely be easier to couples match to a city with multiple programs, but as long as you put in the leg work and keep the programs apprised of your desires, you should do OK.

Ditto on your comments, GAZZMAN.

I would just add to what timtye78 says, and suggest the following cities (in addition to Chicago) in descending order of number of programs:

New York City metro area (including NJ/NY metro area): 12-14 programs (possibly more), depending on how much either of you is willing to commute
Chicago: 6 programs
Boston: 6 programs
LA metro area: 5-6 programs, depending on how much either of you is willing to commute
Philadelphia: 4 programs

There are others, including some that that have 3, but this substantially limits your chances of matching in the same city (i.e., if you only rank three programs each separate from the couples match).

You can shoot for the couples match, but it may be better to focus on one geographic location (like New York) where it won't hurt if you match into separate programs. Prelim years will not be an issue, but there's a chance you both may have to scramble for those to ensure you're in the same city.

Good luck!

Also in Philly, don't forget about UMDNJ-Camden just across the Delaware! That makes 5 programs.

I agree with Skip that applying in cities with multiple programs would be the best way to go about it, and if you happen to end up at the same program, great! If not, at least you'll be in the same city.

Good Luck!
