I took a speech course several years ago at another institution and would like to retake it for an A at my current institution. The course at the first institution was Comm-101 Fundamentals of Public Speaking. The equivalent course at my current institution is Comm-r110 Fundamentals of Speech Communication.

Can I take this course at my current institution and use it as a retake? Both courses are introductory courses in speech/public speaking.

You can retake at a different institution. The courses have to match up though.

what do you mean by courses have to match up though? By name? by credits? By material taught?

I was always curious by what equivalents another course? Same credits hours? Can a course that is more credits hours replace another course?

Example A (hypothetical example):

Intro to Biochemistry 3 credits - F
Biochemistry I - 3 credits - A

would Biochemistry I replace Intro to Biochemistry?

Example B (hypothetical example):

Intro to Biochemistry 3 credits - F
Biochemistry I - 4 credits - A

would Biochemistry I replace Intro to Biochemistry (credit hours changed)?

I have never done a retake so I'm not sure. To my knowledge they have to have the same course number. If they aren't they have to be of a similar discription. There are no guarantees and its at aacomas's descretion. They can be taken at different institutions and you have to list both grades and the second as a repeat.

To my knowledge more credit hours is OK but less is not. If someone has more knowledge on this please chime in.

In your hypothetical I don't think either counts as they are different courses.

Yeah, that's why i was curious about those cases. Because I'm assuming Biochemistry I would cover everything learned and then some from Intro to Biochemistry, so I was not sure if it would be considered a re-take or not.

Its a more advanced version. Calculus won't replace trig. That's what I would assume anyway

I replaced a course called "Structure and Function of Biomolecules" (essentially the first quarter of biochem) with a course called "General Biochemistry I" (also the first quarter of biochem at a different school). The former was 3 units, and the latter was 4 units. I did the same with the second quarter of biochem. At the first school it was called "Bioenergetics and Metabolism," but at the second school it was called "General Biochemistry II." The course descriptions were practically the same, and the repeating course was worth more units so it counted. You just have to make sure the descriptions are similar/same and the newer course is worth the same or more units. It's also easier to match up if the courses are on the same system (semester or quarter).

Were all your courses quarter credits? Or all semester credits? or did they vary?

I'm actually trying to replace a Fundamentals of Organic Chemistry (3 quarter cr) with an Organic Chemistry I (5 semester cr). I'm hoping they allow it.

Yes I did my undergrad and post-bacc at quarter system schools. If Fundamentals of Ochem is the first in a 3 quarter series and OChem I is also the first in a 3 quarter series, you will probably be able to replace it. Although, if the lab is not included in one and it is included in another, that can make it harder.

Ahhh.. Yeah the problem for me is that my 3 cr *quarter* fundamentals class was not a combined lab&class course, whereas my organic chem I course was 5 *semester* crs and the lab was combined. :/
