Courseload

Are 9 credits too few during a postbacc semester? I'm hoping to get into an SMP for next Fall. The classes would be upper level bios relevant to med school (neuro, embryo, and patho), but I'm worried they'll think - "of course you got As, you only took 3 courses". I was originally going to take four courses, but am wondering if I can get away with three, because I'll be working on SMP applications, volunteering, and most importantly, hoping to fit in some MCAT prep. I'm hoping to take the MCAT early summer.

Too few classes.... for who? SMP committee? No way... I mean I can't speak for any SMP admissions staff, but I believe you may be over thinking this. I really don't think they care or hold it against you if you aren't in school 24/7. I took 2 classes in the 3-4 years between graduation and starting my SMP and no one mentioned anything about it.

Maybe get everything else done before the SMP, like MCAT, shadowing, clinical volunteering, etc. Heck, take it easy with 1 or 2 classes just to keep your mind sharp if you think you've already developed the needed studying techniques. No need to burn yourself out before the SMP even begins.
