When a compound melts, are covalent bonds broken? What bonds are broken when a compound melts?

Never.

Covalent bonds are broken by chemical, not physical processes.

The intermolecular bonds are non-covalent and depend on the solid structure.

They could be ionic, van der Waals, or hydrogen bonds depending on the solid.
