I'm currently a pharmacy tech and I have to study for this CPhT thing. Is it just me or is 99% of this stuff giving me knowledge of material that I'll never be able to use and therefore, probably don't need to know anyway?

That is probably the case. Like most things its not how much of the knowledge you will use its the fact you have the intelligence to learn it. Sort of like O-Chem as a pre-req for pharmacy school. Have I never used it since I took the class? Not at all.

You WILL encounter patients who have no idea what the name of the drug they are taking is. They will refer to it as the name of the manufacturer.

I need my Mylan refilled. 😉
