I am a fourth year medical student and am currently applying.
How do I apply to a neurology program that does not offer a preliminary year? I realize this means I have to apply for a PGY2 position.

However, the ERAS application does not distinguish whether I am applying for a PGY2 position for next year or applying for a PGY2 position for two years from now. I hope I am making sense.

If I submit my application, how will the program director know that I am applying for a position two years from now (they are accepting applications now for 2009-2010)?

and how will this effect the match........ since I still have to match for a preliminary for next year and neurology for the year after?

I really hope someone can clarify this for me. It would mean so much!

and if I apply for a preliminary year, my personal statement is geared towards neurology. Do I need to modify it for the preliminary year programs???

In ERAS, when you select a neurology program, it will be listed as "advanced" if the program is only three years, or "categorical" if it is four years (includes the prelim year). After you select the program, there will be a tab in the ERAS box that will let you know if it is advanced/categorical, and you will have to click on this tab (kind of just acknowledging that is what you are applying for).

With reference to applying for prelim programs, at the advice of my Dean of Student Affairs, I didn't modify my personal statement from my neuro statement (which clearly was focused only on neuro). As he put it, everyone knows why you are applying for a year in medicine, so theres no point in writing a statement explaining your interest in medicine when neuro is really what you are ultimately interested in. That said, I think some people do write a separate statement, so in the end it is a personal choice.

1) Get an advisor
2) Read the FAQs on this forum
3) ERAS is matching for 2 years from now in Neurology, not next year.
