Hi folks,

Quick question: how difficult is it to create an extra residency spot, one time only, for a potential resident?

Assuming enough volume, pathology, etc, how difficult to increase a class size from 10 to 11 to accommodate a possible incoming resident and how long is the process?

Thanks

We got approval for a temporary increase for 2 years because radiology at our institution had an unused spot. So it happens. Probably the most important factor is money. Is there an empty position in another department or external funding that can be used?

The ACGME RRC for the specialty would need to approve any increase above the current approved cap. That said, many programs already have caps higher than the number of residents that they have, and even if they didn't it's a usually fairly routine matter assuming your program has adequate case numbers and faculty.

Then the program has to figure out how to pay the extra person. If the institution has money, no big deal. Otherwise, it can get complicated.

1. as above.
2. more importantly, WHY would a program want to create an extra spot (for you?) ??
