Credits vs Semester Hours?

Is there a difference between semester hours and credits. I am looking at some school websites, and for pre-reqs they require Bio w/lab (4 sem hours).

My course was 3 hours of class plus a lab, but it only shows as 3 credits on my transcript. Would this fulfill the requirement? I am Canadian so maybe that is why we show it differently?
