I'm a D2 at Creighton. Creighton puts great emphasis on clinical skills, and has very high expectations for students' clinical development. That makes sense, because as 2quik pointed out there are no residents at Creighton. The D3's and D4's are expected to handle whatever walks through the door. I was told during my interview in 2005 that our scores were second in the country on the NBDE part 2...
Last year our D1 clinical/community experience consisted of visiting neighboring schools and talking with 2-3 elementary school kids/student about dental hygiene, a short perio class where we worked on each other, and clinical rotations which were mostly observational (although I took around 7-8 patient x-rays during the radiology rotation...we have radiology 1st semester as D1's).
They change the curriculum often. This year D2's will be assisting in the clinic and I think that's new. So, if 2quik said the D1's are assisting the D3's, then I guess we'll be assisting the D4's...maybe??
As far as Omaha goes, I think it's a really cool little city. In fact, I really don't feel like I'm in the midwest when I'm in Omaha (there are actually steep hills in Omaha...who knew

). I grew up in upstate NY and I've lived in Denver, Boulder, and Colorado Springs in CO, New Orleans and near Indianapolis. I really don't like the midwest, but I like Omaha a lot more than Indy...and when you take traffic into account Omaha gives Denver and Colorado Springs a run for their money. If you want Chicago, NYC, or LA you're SOL. But, there are lots of cool bars, microbreweries and restaurants. The zoo is really nice. There's a casino if you're into that. There are some big-time concerts/events, but the local music scene and the mid-size venue music scene aren't half as good as Denver. We can get student tickets to UNO mavericks hockey games (they're Div.1). Creighton's B-ball team made the NCAA tourney last year. I think Omaha hosted part of the NCAA men's b-ball last year too, and they host the college world series every year.
There's biking and jogging paths (my class does taco rides, which has something to do with beer, tacos, and riding 20 miles...). Notice how I didn't say anything about NE football, I found that it wasn't that hard to ignore last year.
And no, I'm really not in love with Creighton or Omaha. I'm just procrastinating from reviewing the first 114 pages of operative which we'll be going over in our first class...
😳 Seriously, if you want a great clinical education Creighton will make you earn it and in your pathetic amount of free time there's fun stuff to do in Omaha and you don't end up in stop and go traffic trying to get to it.
