I got accepted to my # 1 school, Creighton I prepared to deposite the $500 soon. But I also have interview at Columbia next month. I convienced myself to join Creighton and cancel Columbia's interview.

But some friends and family members are pushing me to go to Columbia and do the interview becuase of the Ivy league thing. Ok what if I get acepted, w/h one should I chose? Can any body explain to me some of the pros of going to the Ivy leagues ineterms of scholarship and so on?

I have no plan to specialize for the time being. I want to stay as a GP and looking for good clinical exposure.

Thanks

If Creighton is your #1 then why would you want to bother with anything else? Ivy League doesn't really buy you as much as it does in medicine or law. Take a look through the forums and see if you would like Columbia's curriculum and stuff. If you get a feel for it and you'd consider it, then book the interview. As for scholarships, I wouldn't really count on that at this point if you haven't been offered one. Unless youre doing the military route.

you are right. How about this Ivy league thing. I had no idea about that. I am an international applicant. Can you tell me the pros of going to the ivy leagues?

Pro:
-name brand (for that 0.1% that care)
-location (NYC, but can be a con if you're not into big cities)
-may affec residency placement

Con:
-expensive
-SOME people question the clinical strength of Columbia grads
-expensive
-take classes with med students first 2 years (might create more stress than needed)

Someone please correct me if I'm wrong. Since you mention you are an international applicant, I think your chances of scholarship are even slimmer, unless you can manage to pick up some on the side through an external organization (but that wont cover much)

I would advise to choose a dental school that best fits YOUR needs. Yes, location, money, and the schools name can be something to look at, but what is really important is the facilities... What will be available to you during your 4 years and what type of training is available. I am currently a D2 at Creighton and choose this school over my own state school for one large reason. It does not have professional programs (perio, ortho...) so many wonderful and challanging cases that would have been taken away will not. The amount of hours you need for graduation clinically is not a problem and you will actually exceed these. There is also many more opportunities for oral surgery, perio surgery, ortho time. These were important factors for me when deciding a school because it will provide me the opportunity to be more well rounded. I know from friends that for some schools, just trying to get the required hours is very difficult.
No matter what you decide, it is important to look at what you want to achieve while in school and decide which one will provide that for you.
