I want to say that I am a huge F*** up. I transfered to a University in Calfornia and entered with a decent GPA. After attending there for two years now, I killed my GPA mostly from the influences of addicted gambling. I am looking at an ending GPA at this school of 1.75 and a dismissal at the end of this fall quarter. I took the initiative to stop this addicted gambling behavior early in November by self barring myself from all casinos, but this was not enough to save the fall quarter grades which will end in my dismissal. I am allowed to take community college classes or Access classes at the University for Winter Spring and Summer, and these would reflect my eligibility to reenter for fall.

I know I would have to go through this tract to be readmitted at this university. Can I still study to become a doctor? Rather, I want to become a doctor, but is it possible to turn this around and be able to get in medical school. Please help me cause I love the sciences and I love the hospital. If there is any chance of succeeding, then I would definitely pursue that all the way to hell.

If you retake every class with a C or lower and apply to DO (osteopathic) med schools, they only count the most recent grade when they calculate their application cGPA. Their median GPA for those accepted is 3.45. How many classes would you have to retake to get your GPA up that high?

Here is a DO GPA calculator to help you: http://forums.studentdoctor.net/showthread.php?t=450050

I would rather achieve an MD instead of Osteopathy. Are there any options in MD tracks I can take? Thanks. Sorry, I should have been more clear.

Okay, sorry to be harsh, but with a 1.75 you are going to be lucky to get into even a DO school. You NEED to keep that open as an option, because it may be your only option. Is there something you have against DO? They can do anything an MD can. At this point, you need about three more years of straight A's (not even A-s) just to get above a 3.0 if you don't take advantage of retakes that DOs allow for. If you don't get straight A's, you'll probably have to do 4 years to get above a 3.0. So that's why people will be pushing you towards DO.

You should start volunteering somewhere that you can get clinical experience, too. A hospital or free clinic would be a great place. This is going to be a long, hard road for you, whether you pursue MD or DO, and you probably will never get your GPA up to the average for MD acceptance (which is 3.65) unless you stay in school for like seven more years. Your ECs are going to have to be fantastic!

How many credits total do you have? Hopefully not much, because then it will be much easier to raise your GPA back up.

I had a 2.02 GPA by the end of my sophomore year two years ago. I was able to do decent my junior year and better my senior year, and now my GPA is a 3.03. This is in terms of AACOMAS (DO school application service) GPA calculation, though. My AAMC (MD school application service) GPA is around a 2.6 probably.

I also did better on my MCAT than the osteopathic school average, so I believe I can get into an osteopathic school soon hopefully as I keep retaking classes to raise my GPA to a 3.3 or so.

You apparently aren't considering osteopathic schools, so itll be much harder for you. But perhaps you can raise your AAMC to a 3.0 or so, do great on the MCAT, and then get into a post-bacc program somewhere. Then, at that post-bacc program you'll have to do amazing. And then perhaps you can an MD acceptance. This would take an extra few years of very hard work, so i think you should try to put whatever DO prejudice you have beside you.

I have one thing to say about this.

If you have a good credit rating, you could check out the Caribbean medical schools. Some of them don't even require an MCAT score to apply. I don't know the lowest GPA they'll take, but you could read up on it in the International Medicine Forums>Caribbean.

lol this guy is turning down DO schools with a 1.75? i doubt he even is high enough for carribean. isnt that like an F?

Cmon guys this guy is on a ****ty boat and could use some help, rather than poking fun at his situation.

I think the caribbean is a good choice if ur really set on MD. But if u decide that DO is okay with you I think you will find that ppl will generally advice that.

If i were in your position tho, i would probably go to the caribbean and work my ass off there. That will probably land me a decent residency in the US.

your going to have to bring ur GPA to a 2.8+ and get like a 25 on ur mcats for caribbean. BTW i think its better if u aim for a school that requires MCAT so you can work ur ass off for that and get a good mark to help offset ur low GPA.

best of luck to you, DONT GIVE UP NO MATTER WHAT ANY1 SAYS.
you will make for a good success story im sure of it.

EDIT: well done with barring yourself, shows u really want this (which is the important thing).

Agreed. DO's major benefit to you in your situation is that they allow retakes to count instead of the original grade. Retake and own those courses. DO is a wonderful option and provides you the best chance at practicing in the US. Carribean MDs are unanimously panned in this forum. Why? Because even if you complete an MD at one of those schools, you still have a terrible chance at matching into a US residency. Whereas with DO, you have a VERY good chance at matching (maybe even into an MD residency!).

Please take a second look at DO, for your own sake. Reconsider the "prestige" factor that I know is holding you back and realize that DO = MD = Doctor!
