Criteria for closing threads

I'd like to know why certain threads are closed and not others. Specifically, a thread about "hot hygienists", which I view as funny and complimentary, was closed today, whereas a thread that borders on insulting hygienists has been kept open for quite sometime. (The latter refers to the debate about having a separate forum here for hygienists.)
Instead of being so quick to close these entertaining threads, why not just move them to the Lounge or something?
