GPA, research experience, recommendations from preceptors on APPEs (4th year rotations), everything you say and do at the interview, work experience, etc.

They look at how well you'd work together with the people at the site and the program. They try to decide (at the interview) if they want to work with you for the next year.

If they like you at the interviews, it's a good sign. If the people at the program also like you based on how well you work with others and by yourself, it's also good.

Excellent! Btw, do pharmacy schools themselves offer research opportunities?

They do. The processes involved in getting to do one varies by each school, so you have to ask different professors on how they want you to start so that you can do research while in school. Usually, you'll go to national meetings and present posters in front of judges.

Those poster presentations are important for experience in doing presentations and trying to teach someone about what you got to do for research.

If you have any interest in teaching, then those experiences are good. You can usually work on getting a teaching certificate while doing your residency.
