Hey sorry about that score. Much to my chagrin, I had to take the MCAT twice and did much better the second time around.

It sucks, but you need to retake if you want MD. The good news is SC is very friendly to its instate applicants. I found ~29 as the average MCAT for SC matriculants. This is compared to a 31 average nationally.

My recommendation would be to sign up for an August/September retake. Have you submitted your primary yet? If not, go ahead and submit that and indicate you are retaking the MCAT. I'm confident that your state schools will not screen you with a 26 (even with a 7 in verbal). You could always call the admissions office to confirm. Study, study, study in the meantime and work on your secondaries. Submit your secondaries as soon as you finish. Your app will be considered complete once you receive the 2nd MCAT score (let's say theoretically you receive that score mid-september). Yes, it's late(ish) but you still have a great shot with an improved MCAT (even a 28) during this cycle.

p.s. If you retake, buy the Examkrackers Verbal Reasoning. I found it very helpful.

just got my MCAT score back: 26R: 9 PS 10 Bio 7 Verbal... I don't understand the Verbal, so upset. What are my chances for my two state med schools (SC here).

Thanks guys 🙁

Definite retake had you scored above a 10 on both Sciences and maybe slightly higher on the BS I would have said hey you have a good chance but 2 sections below 10 plus your 9 on the PS shows you're struggling with concepts in the Physical Sciences.
Not to worry though you need to study TBR for PS and you will definitely score >11
Retake for the win and stop crying like a baby you're going to do much better!

Both MUSC and USC have 29 MCAT averages among their admitted students, and your GPA is about 0.1 above their average. Still, three points below the accepted average on the MCAT is pretty big. Are you from an URM group? If so, apply. If not, I'd retake.

Thank you so much. I feel like a little kid. I can't stop crying after finding out my score and I'm sinking into depression. I need to find a way out of it and get back to studying. I did submit my primary application which is why I am confused. So I just indicate that I am taking an exam in August and do I have to push the submit button again or what? I guess I will call both schools tomorrow and ask them if they screen a 7 in verbal. 🙁

Also, I only have those two schools on my application for right now. What other schools can I add/should I go ahead and add other schools now or wait till my scores come back in September 🙁

Don't let it get to you. It's a minor setback. Study with a vengeance, and you will be just fine. As for the logistics, I don't see how you can update your primary after its been submitted. Definitely ask the admissions staff the best way to add this to your file. Worst case, you could send in your completed secondaries the day after your scores are released.
