Hi

Are CT's always obtained before a lumbar puncture, or is this only when a pt presents with focal neurological deficits or other evidence for a mass. And does this management differ between adults and pediatric pts? Thanks so much!

There are three criteria for obtaining a CT before doing a LP.
1. Papilledema
2. Focal Neurologic Deficits
3. Altered Mental Status

These guidelines apply to both adult and pediatric patients.
