Hello all,

kinda in a bit of dilemma that may potentially be resolved here in the future or could stay as is.. I'm stuck on 3 schools and know where I would ideally like to be but the financials complicate things. To say the least, I am extremely fortunate to be where I am but it makes this decision no easier for me!

Here is the deal:

CU:

+dream school

+close to family and significant other's family

+ changing to true P/F!!

+ Strong program with good reputation

+ Home is where the heart is

+ incredible health professions campus/ dope library

- Cost

Applied to 4 in-house scholarships, results in April. Cost is lurking around $37k/yr not including COL. Total COA could be $64k/yr with no scholarship.

OUWB:

+ Great Hospitals/ Strong reputation for Beaumont Health

+ Smaller Class size, more intimate

+ Good vibes and family like environment

+ Cross sectional Curriculum was appealing to me and love the mission of the school

+++ Offered a Full Tuition Scholarship +++++

- H/P/F with a 70% attendance required if you want to Honor 🙁

- Lesser known and newer program

- Michigan is far and Significant Other's industry would require her to work in Detroit

- Basement Library

VCU:

+ great vibes and newer campus that I loved

+ true P/F 1st 2 years

+ Cool set up for lecture that will function well for my learning style

+ I love Richmond and close to the DMV

+ Great library and open study areas

+ Solid program and good match

+ offered partial merit scholarship brings OOS tuition down to $33k/yr

- Still far from home and family

- Cost still is high

- Richmond may not be best for Significant Other's work

I feel I could be happy at any of these programs but don’t want to settle. Coming from a Low SES family I would be lying saying cost wasn't on my mind and cost might supersede everything. I have no clue what to do. Any thoughts are welcomed.

You're most disadvantaged with VCU. Go to CU. It's your dream school. If anything let them know how much you love their program but in a predicament because another school offered a full ride to you. Ask if they are willing to help with some scholarships or something because your heart is set on their school. They might want to bid for you.

Either way, I think CU is where you will be most happy. Plus it's got a reputation man. OUWB is a fine school but doesn't compare to what CU can offer you.

what's your source on the "true" part of the pass/fail change. At my interview day the curriculum briefer only mentioned a change to pass/fail grading had passed the subcommittee vote and would likely pass the final vote. However, I have no way of verifying if it is "true" P/F as opposed to unpublished ranking that will later come to light on the MSPE/Dean's letter. That could be a big deal with such a large class size.

I should've worded it better. My apologies! I just heard talk that 1. CU is confirmed in that it's going to pass fail grading (taking off honors) 2. No confirm on this but talk of going to top half and bottom half quartiles so ranking is minimalized (speculation on this part don't quote me)

The big deal to me was that they're going pass fail straight up which is huggeeee

CU makes so much sense... Grew up here and want to serve here. But how could I turn down a Full ride?... Is that really a good move if it means I'm a little happier?

Wait it out fam and decide at the very end. Med school is a hell of a bitch to go through, so being happy is major key. If both schools offer a second day look, go to both CU and OUWB and see how you feel being there again 😉.
