Is anyone familiar with Colorado's MSTP program? I know if it's NIH funded that it has to meet certain criteria, but how are the research programs? I haven't heard very much about the school, but I do know the CU system is in a tough financial situation right now. On their MSTP website, they seem to brag more about the location than on academics. Any thought?

im applying to CU bc it has a lab researching EXACTLY what i want to do. they have a lot going on out there, and id suggest looking thru the departmental links on their website to see if anything interests you. i wasnt aware of their financial situation, but since it's MSTP, it seems like the MD/PhD will remain securely funded . . .and hopefully their labs as well!! best with your search

Funding for research is very good despite the state's financial mishaps. Dollarwise, UCHSC is the #10 recipient of NIH funds in the country. There have been a few cases where facilities that were supposed to be state funded had their funds revoked, but the school's been very good about finding alternative sources of funding or just paying for it themselves. Generally, for every grant that is given for research, another amount that is about %50 of the grant value is given to the school to pay for physical plant type things. Since they receive so much money in grants from the NIH and private sources the school has a lot of money to cover the lack of state help.

The only real problem right now is that the medical school is stuck at the old location for a few more years while the graduate school has moved to the Fitzsimmons campus, so you'll be taking the shuttle or driving between them often. It's about a 20 minute drive between them if you can avoid rush hour.

agree with ylide. Research is strong but some prof's complain how much of their grant money is diverted to indirect costs (ie building the new campus). The new lab space is really state-of-the-art but again you will be shuttling back to the old location where the med school is. Strong dev. biology and clinical trials, weaker molec biology.

Thanks for the input. 50% overhead from grant money is fairly common. Since, the overhead doesnt literally come from the money the lab recieves, the PI is normally happy the school gets it. It usually only becomes a problem when the money goes into a 'black hole'. i.e the administration whines that they have no money, when in fact they get several million dollars a year for doing very little. Does anyone know how many MST's do their PhD at the Boulder campus? Thanks again 😀

I thought I heard also that because of budget problems, the move to Fitzsimons would be significantly delayed or spread out over an inordinate number of years.

The money for the med school has been procured by issuing "certificates of participation" or basically bonds. That meant the school construction should have started in April to be done by July 2005. But then the trial lawyers of colorado sued the school because they said issuing debt was against state law (TABOR law). The school won in February and the trial lawyers appealed. Now the appeal is going to the state supreme court but the judge won't see it till november. Meanwhile the school has to sit on that money while construction costs and inflation increase the costs.... its a mess but it'll probably be done by 2006.
