Cube counting question

Hey guys, I was just having trouble trying to figure out the distribution of sides for this figure D from crack the DAT Pat test 3 in the cube counting section. One questions asks how many cubes count 2 sides painted and apparently the answer is 4. Can someone help me interpret this figure.

Yeah I had a similar mistake
apparently, our eyes are deceiving us.
It looks like the cubes are floating in the air, but the rules say no floating cubes. The red cubes are one with 2 sides.

Oh, thank you! That seems to make sense, I assumed floating cubes were okay after mistaking this figure to have them.
