For U. of Toledo's secondary, they want to know when you've demonstrated cultural competence.

The patient class that I've worked the most with are geriatric patients with skin cancer. A few of them don't speak English and some suffer from dementia. Are geriatric patients considered a cultural class for the purposes of this essay? Or will I have to find something else.

I don't think age puts you in a certain cultural niche. I would stick to interpreting this along the lines of racial/ethnic factors. Like, if one of those patients didn't understand something you did because of his background, or you didn't understand his behaviour first, but then you overcame it, then it'd be an example of cultural competence.

I seriously need more non-white patients. They're killing me, here.
Well, it doesn't have to be a medical experience. I know your MDapps says you're East Asian, were you born here? If no, did you experience a period of cultural adjustment when you moved here? What about the rest of your family? Are your parents or grandparents immigrants? Do you ever feel that there is a cultural difference between you? Like, they don't understand what you are doing and why, or the other way around? I know I definitely notice those things between my parents and I.

LOL, I am also doing this secondary, it was a total surprise, i did not expect this question at all

yeah same here, i htink i might just use a diversity essay that talks about studying abroad and remold it into this toledo essay.

on a side note: that pre-req form, is there any way to type everything in?? my handwriting is pretty sloppy, just wondering...

I only slaughtered those Afghanis that were waving AKs around.....does that count as cultural competence or is that not sensitive enough?

it doesn't sound like it has to be medically related. have you ever taken an anthropology course? volunteered in an area with a large minority population other than your own? studied abroad? even traveled and had an expereince where you had to relate to people of another cultural background? Spent a holiday with a friend of a different background and their family, learned their traditions and experienced them firsthand?

Thanks all. Jochi's and aaj's comments were perfect. Luckily I grew up with plenty of immigrants from Europe, Asia, and the Americas so I just drew upon those experiences. Good luck to the rest of you!
